Common questions and answers
Questions about the Therapies
What does it cost?
The price varies depending on the type and length of the session. Please contact Kia for pricing. Kia occasionally offers therapy free of charge for children and young people in need, depending on availability.
What happens if I become emotionally overwhelmed during a session?
It’s completely okay to feel deeply – it often means something important is happening. The horses are well-acustomed to this work. Kia is trained and experienced, and she will support you through the entire process. You don’t have to perform or “do it right” – you just get to be.
I’m a parent – can my child attend therapy without having to talk much?
Yes. That’s exactly why ESMH is so valuable for children and teens. Many don’t need to verbalise everything they feel – it’s enough to be in a safe interaction with the horse. When they feel ready, conversation often comes more naturally. Kia has extensive experience meeting young people where they are.
How many sessions will I need?
It varies from person to person. Some experience significant change after just one session, while others choose to come several times to work through different aspects of their process. Kia is happy to help you create a plan that suits your needs.
How long is a session?
- The ESMH session is 90 minutes.
- ICT session by phone: 90 minutes for the first session, then 60 minutes
- ESMH/ICT combined session: 90 minutes or longer, depending on the client’s needs
- Healing with horse: 60 minutes
What kind of clothing should I wear?
All sessions involving horses take place outdoors or in unheated buildings, so dress according to the weather.
Are horses involved in all the therapies offered?
During both ESMH and healing sessions, the horse may touch the client with its muzzle. If the client prefers not to be touched by the horse, Kia recommends not booking a healing with a horse session. An ESMH session can be conducted without contact by using a rope barrier.
What should I keep in mind when being with the horses?
The only requirement is to avoid physical contact with the horses.
Can the horses be dangerous?
Kia has been closely connected to horses for 50 years, and her experience is that as long as a horse has the opportunity and space to “flee,” it does not become dangerous. Horses are prey animals, which means they instinctively use flight to survive. That’s why it’s important to her that the horses are always free (not tied or restrained) during sessions.
Do I need to have experience with horses to attend a session?
No, absolutely not. You don’t need any prior experience with horses or feel comfortable around them to begin with. Everything happens at your pace, and Kia is there to guide you every step of the way. The horses are calm, friendly, and trained for this work, and you’ll never be asked to do anything that feels uncomfortable.
Do you need to ride?
No. ESMH is not about riding but about being near the horse on the ground – in interaction, stillness, or movement. In some cases, you may sit on the horse bareback while it stands still, for instance, to practise presence and breathing. But this is always optional.
